Info Post
Named one of the five labels to watch in New York Fashion Week by Fashionista.com, I had high hopes of the Calla Fall 2012 collection. Despite being a newcomer - designer Calla Haynes typically shows in Paris, where she lives - with a two year old line, the fashion world is eagerly watching the work of this Parsons alum, who has held textile and print-making positions for Olivier Theyskens at Rochas and Nina Ricci. Born in Toronto and a finalist for the prestigious ANDAM award in 2010 ('France's largest prize for young fashion designers"), Calla is based on the idea of "relaxed luxury." The designs focus on prints, which form the basis of each look. The result is modern and feminine, sure to be a staple among the young and glamourous fashion set that isn't satisfied by the edgy creations of Alexander Wang and such.
When it comes to feminine printed garments, I'm not difficult to please, but Calla's Fall 2012 collection evoked an eager excitement in me that only arises with the finest of collections. (To give you an idea, a similar emotion was experienced looking through the photographs of Mary Katrantzou's S/S '12 collection.) I can comfortably say that Calla's star is on the rise (and rapidly, at that), and I will make sure to keep a close watch on this label.

Building on a foundational palette of teal and an intriguing bluish-purple, the collection's relatively subtle use of color adds softness to a structured pairing of an asymmetrical jacket and shorts as well as to a relaxed blazer with matching, fantastically executed pants. Bright tights add a pop of whimsy to an otherwise sophisticated collection, yet don't overwhelm the eye. The ballet shoes add a graceful, Parisian air and serves as a suitable final touch to the overall looks.

Overall, a job well done. Calla Haynes has proven herself worthy of her spot on the list of designers to watch. I'm sure I won't be the only one watching.

xoxo
