Anna Sui, long known for her folklorish prints, isn't afraid to push the boundaries. Though one familiar with the label could easily identify this collection as Sui's designs, the looks sent down the runway shared with us something fresh and new, something exciting. Fun outerwear (i.e. a plush grape purple A-line cape) layered over cheerful printed dresses encompass the autumnal vibe. Bold colors radiate optimism and add a little spunk. Accessorizing was key in this collection: bright tights feel sweet in some looks and edgy in others, belts are slung low for casual appeal or in other cases tightly define the waist, and the kitten heels with bows at the pointed toe add innocence, but there's something seductive about them too.
On the whole, the collection was consistent both in and of itself and with Sui's signature style. It was a pleasure to see something drastically different from the other runway shows thus far, yet the looks were true to Sui as a designer.

The most interesting aspect of this collection is the subtle contrast between looks. Many of the dresses had a child-like feel, as if inspired by the apparel offered for little girls. (And they were paired with knit animal hats.) It's the silhouettes of these dresses in combination with the use of fine fabric that help with the sophistication level. Though many a fashion-lover may scoff at such looks, they're actually quite wearable with the right accessories. The look could be defined as quirky-cute, which I'm sure many women will eagerly adopt (i.e. Zooey Deschanel).
The other side of the collection is composed of looks for the sophisticated, somewhat bohemian woman. A look consisting of burgundy, maroon, and red is made up of a furry hat, a (faux?) fur-trimmed jacket and a hippie-esque floral dress with a low-slung belt. This is the quintessential representation of my idea: the perfect combination of a chic young woman and a down-to-earth, hip bohemian girl.
Of course, there's a lot in between. It's hard to describe this collection because there's just so much going on. But this is what Anna Sui does, and she does it well.
