Rarely have I ever enjoyed looking at a fall/winter collection to the extent that I enjoyed Jonathan Saunders's show. Although I tend to wear looser apparel, as an architect's daughter, I have always been attracted to sharp lines and geometrics. Saunders combines color, print, and perfect tailoring effortlessly, putting together a consistently fabulous collection.
Long pencil skirt silhouettes appear 30s-inspired, but the tailored separates and color blocking modernize the influence. The use of shapes appears several times throughout the collection and adds whimsy to cozy sweaters and the like. Bold graphic prints are sprawled across mid-sections and hemlines and feel lush, new, and full of character. The prints are powerful and turn the body into a canvas, the clothes acting as pieces of modern art rather than fabrics used for the sake of covering the body. It takes a strong woman to wear these clothes.
Overall, this is an inspiring collection that is daring and afraid of nothing.
Interestingly enough, however, the aesthetic present in Saunders's womenswear collection is equally strong in his menswear designs. It's always refreshing to see men wearing color.
