As cooler weather begins to impose certain limits on my choice of apparel, I become more intent on the quality of the fabric that warms my body. My wardrobe at this time of year dissipates into its most basic form.
Now that the downhill slide of craftsmanship is so prevalent, particularly in America, I find it even more important to seek out the well-constructed kin to our flood of subpar basics.
Where my summer is dominated by the faraway visual appeal of prints and colors, I now translate this aesthetic into a focus on texture.
Texture is an integral part in fashion, and it is a characteristic that is consistently undervalued and under-appreciated when most of us only see high fashion through the humble lens of the screen. (Indeed high fashion often brings out the best in texture.)
I am currently continuing my accumulation of apparel and accessories for the coming months - highly necessary after my huge closet purge left my collections barren. I never find a satisfying amount of selection when it comes to sweaters and pants around this time of year, but I hope to satiate my craving for variety with texture.
Whether through unusual amalgamations of fabric or distinct textural methods (such as pleating, as with Issey Miyake Pleats Please in the above image), I revel in the thought of look but don't touch being turned on its head.
